Joe Lacob, CEO of the Golden State Warriors, came out after the news that Kevin Durant would depart for the Brooklyn Nets to show his gratitude for Durant on the team for his short time and gave some insight to what his time with the Warriors meant to him and the organization. “As long as I am co-chairman, no player will ever wear No. 35 again on Warriors.” So the Warriors are planning to retire the #35 jersey after his three seasons with the team in which he accumulated two championships, and two finals MVP awards. Usually players get their jersey number hung in the rafters for the longevity of their career being on the team and usually accumulating success, it was a shocker that Durant would be considered for this. With this idea I wanted to make the case for and against retiring different Cavaliers players.
Disclaimer: I will be talking about controversial jersey retirements for the Cavaliers, LeBron is not controversial as the team has been very vocal about retiring his jersey whenever he retires or makes it clear he is not returning to Cleveland as he has hinted at before.
The Cavaliers have seven different jersey numbers currently retired, and not that impressive of resumes are present that the case can be made for several players. The most recent retirement is Zydrunas Ilgauskas, or Big Z, was retired in 2014 in that dead period were LeBron was in South Beach wrecking the league and Cleveland Cavaliers basically handing tickets out for free. I believe this was a stunt to generate some ticket sales and some buzz for TV time as all in all the Cavaliers post LeBron have been a train wreck honestly. Do I believe Big Z should’ve been retired, no I do not. I understand that desperate teams in desperate times do things to just generate some talk and hype but I believe that retiring a jersey is something special and should take a lot for a franchise to never allow someone to even have the option of the number for the future.
Kyrie Irving was someone Cleveland fell in love with as he and LeBron were sort of Batman and Robin, but all that came crashing down after an apparent knee injury and a trade request post championship honeymoon phase. Kyrie Irving will be known in Cleveland for either leaving LeBron and destroying the team internally, or that just mouthwatering game 7 step back three pointer in Curry’s face. Irving does deserve some respect in Cleveland as without him who even knows if LeBron returns in the first place.
Irving played for the Cavs from 2011 – 2017. In this time he went to 4 all-star games, won the three point contest, was named the All-Star game MVP, was voted Rookie of the Year along with the Rising Stars Challenge MVP and All Rookie First Team, and lastly made an All NBA Third Team. Quite the resume for such a young man in the league. Over his time with Cleveland he averaged 21.4 ppg, 5.5 apg, and 3.4 rpg. He has all the numbers to justify having his #2 jersey hung in the rafters, except one part. Of the seven Cavaliers retired players, only one person has less than 8 seasons with the Cavaliers and is retired. Irving only played for the Cavaliers 6 seasons and with this comes some dispute whether or not he is worthy of this honor, just based on the Cavaliers history of what jersey retirements mean to them I would rule out Kyrie as a jersey retirement. With the longevity of his career being minor and his image by the team I see no reason for him to have his jersey retired. Great career, whenever he comes to town play him a thank you video, but not worth a rafter spot in my opinion.
