Does Kyrie Irving deserve to have his jersey retired by the Cavs?

Joe Lacob, CEO of the Golden State Warriors, came out after the news that Kevin Durant would depart for the Brooklyn Nets to show his gratitude for Durant on the team for his short time and gave some insight to what his time with the Warriors meant to him and the organization. “As long as I am co-chairman, no player will ever wear No. 35 again on Warriors.” So the Warriors are planning to retire the #35 jersey after his three seasons with the team in which he accumulated two championships, and two finals MVP awards. Usually players get their jersey number hung in the rafters for the longevity of their career being on the team and usually accumulating success, it was a shocker that Durant would be considered for this. With this idea I wanted to make the case for and against retiring different Cavaliers players.

Disclaimer: I will be talking about controversial jersey retirements for the Cavaliers, LeBron is not controversial as the team has been very vocal about retiring his jersey whenever he retires or makes it clear he is not returning to Cleveland as he has hinted at before.

The Cavaliers have seven different jersey numbers currently retired, and not that impressive of resumes are present that the case can be made for several players. The most recent retirement is Zydrunas Ilgauskas, or Big Z, was retired in 2014 in that dead period were LeBron was in South Beach wrecking the league and Cleveland Cavaliers basically handing tickets out for free. I believe this was a stunt to generate some ticket sales and some buzz for TV time as all in all the Cavaliers post LeBron have been a train wreck honestly. Do I believe Big Z should’ve been retired, no I do not. I understand that desperate teams in desperate times do things to just generate some talk and hype but I believe that retiring a jersey is something special and should take a lot for a franchise to never allow someone to even have the option of the number for the future.

Kyrie Irving was someone Cleveland fell in love with as he and LeBron were sort of Batman and Robin, but all that came crashing down after an apparent knee injury and a trade request post championship honeymoon phase. Kyrie Irving will be known in Cleveland for either leaving LeBron and destroying the team internally, or that just mouthwatering game 7 step back three pointer in Curry’s face. Irving does deserve some respect in Cleveland as without him who even knows if LeBron returns in the first place.

Irving played for the Cavs from 2011 – 2017. In this time he went to 4 all-star games, won the three point contest, was named the All-Star game MVP, was voted Rookie of the Year along with the Rising Stars Challenge MVP and All Rookie First Team, and lastly made an All NBA Third Team. Quite the resume for such a young man in the league.  Over his time with Cleveland he averaged 21.4 ppg, 5.5 apg, and 3.4 rpg. He has all the numbers to justify having his #2 jersey hung in the rafters, except one part. Of the seven Cavaliers retired players, only one person has less than 8 seasons with the Cavaliers and is retired. Irving only played for the Cavaliers 6 seasons and with this comes some dispute whether or not he is worthy of this honor, just based on the Cavaliers history of what jersey retirements mean to them I would rule out Kyrie as a jersey retirement. With the longevity of his career being minor and his image by the team I see no reason for him to have his jersey retired. Great career, whenever he comes to town play him a thank you video, but not worth a rafter spot in my opinion.

If the Cleveland Browns were cast as a movie

This theory comes from twitter @FilmStudyPod and I decided to take my own swing at it.

The prompt is “…Tell us which actors you would cast in a movie about the Cleveland Browns and what role would they play.”

Now this just seemed too fun to not attempt and please let me know if you disagree below.

  • John Dorsey – Kevin Costner

This one comes mostly from the movie “Draft Day” as Costner saves the Browns in the movie (in theory) and Dorsey has done the same so far. Plus they are about the same height and weight so workouts out perfectly.

  • Joe Thomas – Chris Pratt

What better than to get someone to play the legend himself than a guy who went from an honest small name to huge A list actor such as our beloved Joe Thomas has done as he is now Mr. Thursday Night Football. Also they both went from fat to really in shape dudes.

  • Baker Mayfield – Taron Egerton

Looking for a stocky yet muscular smart mouthed guy took some thought, however this one is a straight derivative thought from the movie series “Kingsman” where Taron Egerton plays a defying all odds foul mouthed hero, such as our own number 6.

  • Tyrod Taylor – Donald Glover

Needed a well spoken and very chill tempered guy for this role and who better than Donald Glover. Glover is known for being a sort of relaxed role who often has wise things to say. I accredit Tyrod for taking Baker under his wing, even though we all know he wanted to be the starter. Good luck in L.A.

  • Johnny Manziel – Zac Efron

This one was probably the hardest to embody the success and downfall of a party crazed 20 year old man, and I feel Efron hits this one on the dot.  Efron mostly plays the douche-bag role in most movies and Manziel was sort of known for his antics and Efron could really pull this role off.

  • Odell Beckham Jr – Michael B. Jordan

OBJ to MBJ right here, who else could pull off the OBJ on the field passion and off the field personality than Michael B. Jordan as he has shown from the “Creed” movie series to the diversity of “Black Panther” being Killmonger, I believe this role MBJ could crush.

  • Jarvis Landry – Chadwick Boseman

Just like Jarvis and Odell are teaming back up, why not have Boseman and Jordan rejoin like they did in “Black Panther”. Boseman does have an American accent he can do as seen in “Draft Day” (also Costner and Boseman could rejoin forces here). Boseman does have a similar hair to Jarvis also.

  • Hue Jackson – Laurence Fishburne

Now Laurence Fishburne to me is a villain in most movies and Hue Jackson is not a guy well liked in Cleveland to say the least.

  • Josh Gordon – Jaden Smith

Who better to play marijuana’s favorite guy than Jaden Smith, a fellow confusing character known for having talent yet always doing and saying questionable things.

  • Myles Garrett – John Boyega

Myles is a unique fellow as he is an intellectual muscle machine, John Boyega fits him well as he has the size and character that could pull off the dinosaur loving charisma of Myles, hopefully he likes dogs as much as Myles does.

  • Jimmy /  Dee Haslam – Steve Martin & Amy Poehler

Sort of an odd matchup of comedy stars here but an exciting goofy couple that can pull off the owners who always seem to feel the need to butt in on everything happening. In a movie these two could really make for an interesting background side pair.

  • Freddie Kitchens – Jeff Bridges

Finding someone with the hard country accent and charisma is no easy task, but I think Bridges could pull this role off and with ease as he resembles a lot of what Kitchens embodies, just hope he is okay with losing his hair flow.

Cleveland Cavaliers 2019 Draft Recap

Well the Cleveland Cavaliers have truly shown the fans something after that rough regular season by adding 3 first round picks in this year’s NBA Draft. Coming off a 19-63 regular season there was really nowhere to go but up honestly. Koby Altman sat there with the 5th overall pick and the 26th overall pick (acquired via Houston trade) going into the night and would later hold the 30th overall pick (acquired via trade on draft night), and lastly no second round picks. As the draft has come to an end, let’s review the selections made by Altman.

Round 1 Pick 5: Darius Garland (Guard), Vanderbilt University

The biggest knock on Garland is sample size, coming off a 5 game season in college that took a toll with a meniscus injury that sidelined him for the remainder of the Commodores season, it can be a bit risky taking a chance on damaged goods this early. The best part of Garland’s game is truly his shooting ability to pull up anywhere inside the half court line to the basket, he has a clean shot stroke and it is truly something that will not be affected by that injury, in theory. Coming out of high school Garland was regarded as the #1 point guard in the 2018 high school class and was a projected lottery pick from the start. He averaged 16.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game, while shooting 47.8% from the three, which is the most exciting part of his game. His NBA player comparison is Damian Lillard, according to ESPN analysts. The biggest concern in my eyes on Garland are how does he fit with Sexton, what does this injury truly affect, and can he get better on the defensive side of the ball. All in all John Beilein should be very excited to get to work with this caliber of skill and potential.

Round 1 Pick 26: Dylan Windler (Forward), Belmont University

Windler is a two-time All-Ohio Valley Conference selection and a finalist for the Julius Erving and Lou Henson awards as a senior. Windler at Belmont averaged 21.3 points, 10.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and shot 42.9% from the three. This pick came as a surprise to most people as he was not majorly talked about going into the draft but his numbers speak to his advantage, even if they are in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC). The Cavaliers desperately needed a small forward at the departure of Lebron James last off season and it is apparent that the draft selection here was based off need. While I will never compare anyone really to James, Windler does offer some enticing capabilities as he is an effective around the rim scorer and great pick and roll player, which will help the Cavs young backcourt. Standing at 6’ 7.5” and 196 pounds I would expect Windler to start a play good minutes, despite being a rookie he is 22 years old and played all four years of college ball which speaks on his experience level and I am sure with this young team coming in to next season Beilein will look to Windler to hopefully teach some of the others a few things and step up as a young leader.

Round 1 Pick 30: Kevin Porter Jr. (Guard/Forward), USC

To acquire this pick the Cavaliers traded 4 future second round picks, and cash incentives, to Detroit Pistons to acquire Kevin Porter Jr. A lot of potential here in a player that has yet to turn 19, a 6’ 5” who mostly plays two-guard is also a great position of need for this roster, and the price the Cavs paid for this selection shows that. Porter Jr. a 6’6” 218 pound prospect coming out was very much limited on the court, time-wise, due to injury and a one game suspension due to “personal conduct issues”. The biggest concerns on Porter Jr. are the off the court issues as he lacks the overall maturity and decision-making as those around him have voiced. However if this can be resolved his athleticism, and overall skill set do

make him a worthy NBA first round talent, lets pray this is not another Josh Gordon style disappointment.

Cleveland Browns Schedule Breakdown: Quarter 1

Cleveland Browns Schedule Breakdown: First Quarter

First of all to start this we will not be looking into the preseason as the last time we won that thing we went 0-16 so I am praying for 0-4 honestly, and I am sure that would fire Baker up even more, if that is even possible at this point.

Week 1: Home vs Tennessee Titans.

Marcus Mariota comes to town with what seems like half a throwing arm coming off last season, and with a head coach that didn’t realize he had Derrick Henry until Week 14 last year so I am feeling confident about this one. With Mike Vrabel coming in with a very questionable QB room, granted their offensive line does come with left tackle Taylor Lewan who will bow and arrow any opposing member of a team (cough cough Josh Norman), this roster does not stack up talent wise to the Browns. I am sure with all the new assets we have accumulated it will be a learning curve of “Hey Odell remember how Eli just kind of threw soft passes, yeah I am gonna just beam them at you so get ready.” Browns take this one at home with a should be easy W.

Week 2: MNF Away vs NY Jets

Will this be Dilly Dilly time part two? Will Tyrod Taylor watch in disgust from the passenger seat (even though that technically is with Los Angeles now), will Carlos Hyde have another kid? Stay tuned! But in all seriousness this will be interesting matchup as we have Mayfield vs Darnold again on primetime, we will also see Odell back in NY (not the Giants but still its something I think), and the Browns defense will take on their old buddy Leveon Bell, granted this defense is entirely new since he last played. The Jets made a fair amount of moves, like the Browns, this offseason and could that correlate to success, I am leaning no on this one. Adam Gase, Head Coach of the Jets, has been very public about not wanting Leveon after they paid a ransom to get him, plus a fired GM after the draft this smells of good ol dysfunction, something us Browns fans are very used to seeing. I lean with Browns win here as Darnold still seems turnover prone and Baker likes the spotlight, plus Leveon is going to a lesser offensive line than what he had with the Steelers. Browns take this one away in close margin.

Week 3: SNF Home vs LA Rams

Back to back prime games, here we go! Now this should serve as a sort of reality check for the Browns here facing the NFC Champions at home in the big lights. While I believe Sean McVay has saved Jared Goff’s career (yes he is young but that first year was rough) I do find him to be a competent QB, however with Todd Gurley having the knees of an 80 year old man and the Rams electing to not resign CJ Anderson there is some hope here. Remember that the Browns were one of the worst teams stopping the run last year and if Todd Gurley is just bluffing us all it could be a long game here as we get the ball run down our throats. The Rams defense is aging with Aqib Talib, Clay Matthews, and Eric Weddle, there is still some scary guys mostly being Aaron Donald who is just a beast. I think this one comes down to a field goal or so and I think the Rams take this one on the road from the Browns.

Week 4: At Baltimore

The rematch we have all been waiting for is finally upon us, with that Week 17 matchup falling to Baltimore this one will definitely be circled on Baker Mayfield’s calendar. Now opening up the AFC North matchup on the road here will prove some things about this team and I do not assume this to be a win by any means as this Ravens roster did lose talent and Lamar is just horrible in my opinion I find this to be a field goal game, now the Ravens have Tucker who is definitely a top 3 kicker in the league and Greg Joseph or Austin Seibert are no locks here for the points that Tucker can give. I am giving this one to the Ravens by a field goal. Lamar is still horrible though.
